Stat Value

My first method of measuring the value of a card, Hero Threat Value, is good for looking at whether the overall stats of a Hero are good value for money. However, in an average game of The Lord of the Rings LCG you will only ever use one stat on a character card each round (out of Willpower, Attack and Defence).

So I have created a second method for measuring the value of a character card. Most characters have one value out of Willpower, Attack and Defence that is higher than the other values. When this is the case, this means that in a game where you use that character you will usually only use them for that value. So you could say that a character is only as good as their best stat.

Considering this, we want to use formulas that compare a Heroes best Stat with their Threat Cost and an Allies best Stat with their Resource Cost.

I have used the following for Hero cards:

"Stat Value" = (Highest Stat x 4) / Printed Threat Cost

First, we identify the value of the highest value stat the Hero has out of their Willpower, Attack and Defence. Then we multiply this by four. I have picked four because we are looking at one of the four parts of a Hero card that can usually be used to predict their Threat Cost. Finally, this is divided by the Threat Cost printed on the card, and the result is shown as a percentage.

I have used the following for Ally cards:

"Stat Value" = (Highest Stat x 2) / Printed Resource Cost

First, we identify the value of the highest value stat the Ally has out of their Willpower, Attack and Defence. Then we multiply this by two. I could have instead multiplied it by four and then later divided it by two, but just multiplying it by two is quicker. This is because a normal Ally Cost is predicted by taking their four stats, adding them together and then halving this. Finally, this is divided by the Resource Cost printed on the card, and the result is shown as a percentage.

A percentage higher than 100% means that if you always use the characters highest stat then you are getting good "value for money" considering their cost. A percentage of exactly 100% means that the character is average value if you always use their highest stat. A percentage lower than 100% means that even the characters best stat is not good value considering their cost.

Stat Value will be useful for players who want to find characters that can be assigned one job and excel at it, but not be too expensive despite this.

As an example, look at the Leadership Hero Gloin from the Core Set:

Highest stat out of Willpower, Attack and Defence = 2 (Both Willpower and Attack)
"Stat Value" = (2 x 4) / 9 = 8 / 9 = 89%
