#1 Ally for Stat Value - Vassal of the Windlord

Which Ally has leapt to the top of our Ally Stat Value list? It is the Vassal of the Windlord! This Tactics Ally is found in the Dead Marshes adventure pack from the Mirkwood cycle expansions. His Stat Value is 600%.

This eagle earns his place by providing three Attack for a Resource Cost of only one. Admittedly, the eagle will leave play after he is used in an attack, but just like the Silvan Refugee and Winged Guardian, this cheap card could give you a much needed boost at the start of a game while you are still building up more stable allies.

The fact that this card is so cheap seems to be characteristic of Allies that made the top places on this list. The measure of Stat Value for Allies seems to reward cards for having low costs more than for having high stats. The top four items in this list have only cost either one or two resources each.

It is also interesting to note that the Tactics sphere dominates the top of this list. Out of the top five Allies for Stat Value, three of them have been from Tactics. The sphere that focusses so heavily on combat also appears to provide some of the best Allies that do one job and do it well. By contrast, it itsn't too surprising that Leadership and Lore Allies didn't get a single look into the top spots.

#2 Ally for Stat Value - Defender of Rammas

The second best Ally for their Stat Value is the steadfast Defender of Rammas. This Tactics Ally is found in the Heirs of Numenor deluxe expansion from the Numenor cycle. His Stat Value is 400%.

This is the card that supposedly replaced the Winged Guardian Ally, who had the same Defence value of four for only a Resource Cost of two, but that eagle would remove itself from play after defending if you didn't bribe it with more resources to stay. Whereas the Gondorian soldier we are looking at here will give you an amazing defender for a small cost and stay with you. By switching the eagle for the soldier you do lose the Sentinel keyword, but everything else seems to be an improvement.

If you have even a single Tactics Hero it would seem worthwhile having this Defender from Gondor in your deck, unless maybe that Tactics Hero is Beregond and you aren't anticipating a swarm of enemies.

#3 Ally for Stat Value - Silvan Refugee

Going by Stat Value, the third best Ally currently in the game for their Resource Cost is Silvan Refugee. This Spirit Ally is found in the Druadan Forest adventure pack from the Numenor expansions cycle. The Stat Value of this card is 400%.

The value of two on the Willpower of this Ally for the low cost of only one resource makes it easy to include in any deck with Spirit, perhaps especially in multi-sphere decks. that extra questing power that can come into play from the very first round could make a strong start to your progress.

The downside of course is that this particular elf leaves play as soon as things get violent. Or specifically, whenever a character leaves play. That means that the elf will only stick around for as long as you can keep all your other characters alive. Oh, and don't use any Allies that automatically remove themselves from play like Gandalf. Lastly, you need to be able to cancel any damage dealing treacheries that appear from the encounter deck because this elf only has one Health.

So this Ally is certainly what you might call fragile. But for a cost of only a single resource, an extra two Willpower for a round or two seems worth the cost.

#4 Ally for Stat Value - Winged Guardian

The Ally that takes fourth place for Stat Values is the Winged Guardian. This Tactics ally is found in the Hunt for Gollum Adventure Pack from the Mirkwood cycle expansions. His Stat Value is 400%.

This handy eagle was the first character in the game to boast four defence, and for a cheap cost of only two resources it is no wonder it made it high in this list.

With stats of zero for Willpower and Attack, there's only one thing this bird is good at, and it does it well. The Sentinel keyword is a nice bonus for multiplayer games, but needing to pay resources to keep this Ally in play would eventually cause it to be somewhat replaced by another Tactics ally.

#5 Ally for Stat Value - Saruman

For the first post in our series looking at the Stat Value of Allies currently available, the treacherous wizard Saruman enters the list in 5th place. He is a Neutral Ally found in the Voice of Isengard expansion from the Ring Maker cycle. His Stat Value is 333%.

By comparison to Hero Stat Values, this is extremely high, and we still have four other Allies to go that are even better! The calculation for Ally Stat Values is different for Hero Stat Values (see the tab at the top of the page), but follows the same principle. As we look at the best and worst Allies with this figure, we shall see that Allies vary a lot more than Heroes; it is much rarer for an Ally to have a straight forward value of 100%.

But let's look at Saruman in a bit more detail. The reason for his high Stat Value is in plain sight; a portion of his Resource Cost has clearly been replaced by the Doomed keyword in his text box. You might wonder if his low cost is also due to the fact that he leaves play at the end of the round, too. He shares this mechanic with the Ally versions of Gandalf, but Saruman is placed higher than his Istari brethren in the Stat Value list because his stats are less balanced. His Attack value of five for such a low cost earns him this position.
